Lord Robert Edward Henry Somerset was born 1776, son to Henry Somerset, fifth Duke of Beaufort.
Lord Robert Edward Henry Somerset sat as MP for Monmouth from 1799 to 1802 and then for Gloucestershire from 1803 to 1829. Also during this time Lord Somerset led an illustrious military career, finding favor with the Duke of Wellington and being thanked by Parliament on a number of occasions.
Having climbed the ranks of the army to Lieutenant General by 1825, and he was briefly appointed Lieutenant General of the Ordnance in 1829 to 1830 and also Surveyor General of the Ordnance in 1835. Lord Somerset was promoted again to Colonel in 1836 and the to General in 1841.
He died in 1842 of a long-standing heart complaint.
