Sir Stephen Remnant Chapman was born in 1776, his father was Richard Chapman of Tainfield House.
Chapman joined the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich and began a successful military career. Lord Mulgrave appointed Chapman as Secretary to the Master General when he became Master General of the Ordnance in 1810. Chapman held this position until 1818 when Mulgrave relinquished his position to the Duke of Wellington. Chapman went on to build his career as Civil Secretary of Gibraltar and then Governor of Bermuda. In between these posts he was knighted in 1831.
Chapman eventually returned home to Tainfield House and died in 1851.
