John Waller

John Waller has spent a lifetime studying arms and armour and is a world authority on historic combat.

He is a noted fight director and as well as being a teacher at prestigious drama academies he has directed combat sequences in many films and stage and opera productions. He is an authority on archery and has for many years been an adviser to major archaeological sites, notably the Mary Rose and the Towton battlefield.

Until his recent retirement John was Creative Director of the Royal Armouries where he directed the popular daily live interpretations and horse shows and was the adviser during the production of the many films shown within the Royal Armouries public galleries.

A flash in the pan

This expression originates with the misfire of a flintlock or similar gun. The powder in the pan was supposed to ignite the main charge in the barrel. Sometimes only the powder in the pan flashed without firing the main charge.
