Photocall – You are invited to send a reporter/photographer to record a major milestone in the £3.5m revamp of the Royal Armouries Museum at Fort Nelson at 11am on Monday (July 4).
See international engineers Beck and Pollitzer move some of the greatest guns in Britain’s long and illustrious history into their new home; the breathtaking new glass-sided gallery The Voice of The Guns.
The highly-skilled operation starts Monday – watch the anti-aircraft guns that defended Britain from the power of the German Luftwaffe as they’re manoeuvred into position.
Fort Nelson has undergone a major revamp, thanks to a £2m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Project highlights also include a new visitor centre, classroom-of-the future, and brand new café overlooking The Solent and Meon Valley.

- The Royal Armouries at Fort Nelson houses the national collection of historic cannon and big guns. The museum houses one of the world’s finest collections with over 350 cannon dating back over 600 years. The collection originated at HM Tower of London and has been on display in Hampshire since 1995.
- The Royal Armouries at Fort Nelson also tells the story of the Palmerston Forts, built to protect Portsmouth from a feared French invasion in the 1860’s.
