Royal visit for Armistice Day - Friday, 12 November 2010
The Royal Armouries Museum was delighted to have had HRH Prince Michael of Kent in attendance at the Leeds Armistice Day service yesterday (November 11).
Prince Michael – who is the Queen’s cousin – officially unveiled the West Riding Woodcarvers’ Display and then met veterans after the service, followed by a tour of galleries at the museum on Clarence Dock.
November at the Royal Armouries Museum, marks a month of thought-provoking events “Remember, Reflect, React”, plus the arrival of a new exhibit to honour the war dead. The Royal Armouries has lined up a programme of events to honour those who made the “ultimate sacrifice”.
The horror, suffering, courage and human spirit of those who took part in the two World Wars were the inspiration for a new exhibit – 95 hand-carved wooden panels by the West Riding Woodcarvers Association (WRWA).
The panels will go on show in the Hall of Steel at the museum in Clarence Dock for the whole of November as part of the Month of Remembrance.
Armistice Day events included:
- Armistice Day Service: Thursday, November 11 at 10.30am – included two-minute silence
- Service conducted by Reverend Gordon Warren, Chaplain of the Royal Navy
- Yorkshire Regiment four-piece brass band
- Sing Live Choir
- Roll Call of the recently fallen
- Poppy drop.
Remembrance Month events include:
- Actors’ performances: November 1 – 30 – Remembrance-themed interpretations throughout the day from 10.15am.
- Have-a-go sword – every weekend in November 3.15pm (45 mins), Dojo, Oriental Gallery. £5 per person suitable for 8 years plus.
- Jester’s yard – every weekend in November, 11am – 4pm, 5th Floor, £2.50 per child, adults free.
- Remembrance Day silence – November 14, 11am
- Only Water Between, play, performances on November 10, 11, 12, 17, 18 21, 22, 24, 25, 28, 29 at 1pm lasting approx 45 mins. Price £3 adults, Concessions £2, War Cinema.
Only Water Between is a unique, moving and true story of love, life and loss. Hear the fatally-linked stories of Great War soldier Jack Adam and his wife, Gert, and Hiram Maxim, inventor of the machine gun as they unforgettably converge.
The play was first commissioned by the Royal Armouries Museum in 2006. Written by then Writer-in-Residence Peter Spafford, based on original letters and memoirs from the First World War.
- History in Action, at weekends, from November 6, at 2.30pm. This special interactive 45-min family show features film, music, live performance and the opportunity to handle objects from the collection. Price – Adults: £3, Concessions (3-16, 60+): £2.
- Surviving the Peace, photographic exhibition provided by the Mines Advisory Group November 16 – 28.
The purpose of the exhibition is to raise awareness of mine action, the problems caused by conflict and international development Set in 14 countries around the world, the exhibition tells the story of the struggles and triumphs faced by survivors as they emerge from war and begin battling a new set of challenges in the aftermath of violence.
It contains powerful images, captured by Sean Sutton, documenting the conflicts that have scarred our recent history and the impact they have had on the lives of many men, women and children around the world.
