William III (reigned 1689 -1702)

Description

Construction

Carved from a single block

Type of Wood

Soft wood

Appearance

Realistically painted overall. Carved ears and very hooked nose. Dark brown hair, almost black to the back of the head. Remains of painted beard and moustache visible below surface of final repainting. Brown eyes which unfortunately appear to be glancing sideways, giving the head a rather shifty look.

Paint Analysis

Five paint finishes. The ground is lead white with a trace of red lead while the original flesh tones were pale pink, mixed from lead white and red ochre. On the fourth scheme a black beard and moustache were added, not quite hidden by the present paint treatment.
