Description

Lieutenant-General Sir George H. F. Berkeley joined the army in 1802 as cornet in the Royal Horse Guards. He served under the Duke of Wellington during the Peninsula wars as Assistant Adjutant-General, and was present at the battle of Waterloo.

Berkeley is listed in the British Imperial Calendar as Surveyor General of the Ordnance in the year 1853, a position he held under the government of Lord Derby from February to December 1852. He died in London in 1857 after a short illness aged 72.
