Tunnels, Main Magazine, North Caponier

From the street, visitors can enter the main tunnel that allowed the garrison to reach various key parts of the Fort under cover.

First was the magazine, fitted out to store gunpowder in wooden barrels but altered to take Bofors ammunition during the Second World War. The by-pass tunnel for those not needing to enter the magazine with its special safety provisions, can be seen.

The ammunition hoist can next be seen on the way to the North Caponier. Here the ground floor, commanding the lower moat level, has been re-armed with correct original armament restored to fire blanks.

On returning from here visitors may turn left to climb a spiral stair leading to the North Mortar Battery.
