Officers' Mess
Officers’ Mess and Anteroom
These adjacent rooms on the upper level of the Redan were restored and furnished to form part of the museum, showing how some parts of the Fort were used when garrisoned during the reign of Queen Victoria. In wartime, they could have been used for flank defence guns.
The Mess fell into disuse after the First World War. During the Second World War, the CO lived in a new bungalow built outside the Fort. When the Fort was finally abandoned by the MoD, these two rooms and the rest of the Redan were burnt out by vandals.
Both rooms are now used for civil wedding ceremonies and corporate bookings but are open to visitors on special occasions. The anteroom, with its gunport enlarged to form a window early in the 20th century, offers fine view over the Solent and Isle of Wight to the West.
