Christopher Smith

Christopher Smith is a Senior Conservator at the Royal Armouries Museum based at the Tower of London.

Biography

Christopher Smith came to the Armouries for a six week summer placement some 24 years ago. He was trained under the watchful eyes of Ted Smith and Arthur Davies who ran the Armouries workshop from the late 1940s.

After serving an apprenticeship of several years making washers, tea, armour parts, and stripping firearms he then specialised in the conservation and restoration of armour.

He completed building a replica of the Sardis helmet in 1992, which was on display in the War gallery in Leeds until quite recently. Chris has worked at both the Tower of London and in Leeds. He is now based back at the Tower where he maintains the arms and armour displays in the White Tower.

The whole truth

The phrase "Lock, stock and barrel" refers to something in its entirety, the whole thing – in the same way that a complete gun has a lock, a stock and a barrel.
