Access sessions

Royal Armouries’ staff are experienced at working with users with special educational needs. Visits are tailored to meet the individual requirements of groups and many workshops focus on exploring objects by touch and sound. All of our sessions are offered as outreach as well as on-site. There are a limited number of dates on-site, please contact us for details.

The sessions on offer include:

Locking the Tower

This BagBooks multi-sensory resource allows pupils, who could otherwise miss out, to experience a trip to the Tower of London. There are plenty of hands on activities that help to unlock the barriers to communication.
This session is particularly suitable for PMLD, SLD and MLD users

Arty Armour

Students will have the opportunity to get ‘hands on’ with armour from the Royal Armouries collection, and then do one of a range of craft activities on offer. Students will not only learn more about protection but also have fun doing it!

Getting to Grips with Armour

This multi-sensory session encourages students not just to look at armour but also to investigate its feel, smell and sound. They will get to grips with both modern and historic body protection and consider how safe wearing the objects would make them feel

ArTmour

This series of workshops will involve an object-handling session, with protection at its core, and an art activity led by a professional artist.
Art sessions include:

Coronation Recreation

Students will get the chance to investigate our replica Crown Jewels, learn about the Coronation and Commonwealth and then take part in their own coronation. There is the option of closing the session with a craft activity that allows students to design and make their own crown jewels

Did you know?

The whole truth

The phrase "Lock, stock and barrel" refers to something in its entirety, the whole thing – in the same way that a complete gun has a lock, a stock and a barrel.
