Conservation Policy

Mission Statement

To preserve in perpetuity and gain further technical knowledge of the collection that is the Royal Armouries, enabling greater public understanding and access to the collection for research, exhibitions and loans both now and in the future.

This policy will be reviewed as and when appropriate.

1. This policy defines the principles and minimum standards, which will apply to the storage, conservation, and conservation documentation of the collection and of objects held by the museum on loan.

2. The collection will be conserved to internationally recognised standards using both passive and interventive techniques, in order to maintain a worldwide reputation as a centre of excellence for the conservation of arms and armour.

3. All incidents of damage to an object within the museum should be reported to the Conservation Department.
