History

Our handling collection has breadth and depth. These taught seminars, combine a presentation with first hand study of original and replica artefacts for a minimum of 15 students. Our Seminar Studies put AS and A2 students in touch with original archives as well as objects.

Feud and Faction

Explores the relationship between monarchy and nobility in 15th century England, the rise of Bastard Feudalism and the importance of feud and faction in the Wars of the Roses and the reigns of the early Tudor monarchs.

Tudor Monarchy and Rebellion

Uses a variety of evidence to explore the the Pilgrimage of Grace.

The World Turned Upside Down

Investigates the attitudes and beliefs that led England into Civil Wars from 1642 to 1651, the motivations and experiences of individuals in ‘a world turned upside down’ and the wars’ impact on society.

The Age of War 1789-1945

Investigates revolutions in technology, democratic movements and the recruitment of mass armies.

Causes of The First World War

Examines the influence of imperial and naval rivalry, industrialists and mass production, on the political and military decisions that led to the outbreak of war in 1914.

Accessing Archives

Our extensive archive collection includes documents, diaries, letters and ephemera showing the soldiers view of many battles and wars from 1789-1945. These sessions are ideal for extending the range of opportunities for students to enhance their knowledge of a specific time-period, or further develop their critical thinking and historical analysis skills.

Did you know?

First commerical steel melting

Benjamin Huntsman of Sheffield is widely credited with the first commercial melting of steel in around 1740, using his crucible process. However, the melting of steel had long been practiced in central Asia and India and was known as Damascus steel.
