KS4: Art Studio
It is an unpleasant reality that humanity has spent large amounts of time designing for doomsday. We have been engaged in a race to perfect some of the most extraordinary weapons and cultivated the conviction they are acceptable to use.
From the grand designs of Inigo Jones to the street style of camouflage, the Royal Armouries collection provides a challenging subject and engaging object of study.
- Develop understanding of historical and contemporary art and design
- Use a range range of media including weaving and textiles, copper and metalwork, modroc, printing and card.
These themes demonstrate some of the ways in which the collection can be approached.
Slavery
- Provocative textile art & print creative art workshop
- Appraising artistic styles like chinoiserie & artefacts financed by the transatlantic slave trade.
- Explore & discuss the causes and long term consequences of the trade triangle across the globe and through time.
Armoured Animals: Sculptured form in three dimensions
- A hands on exploration of the construction & techniques of articulated armours from the natural & manufactured worlds.
- Creative workshop using metal, textiles, leather & card.
Japan
- Printmaking workshop utilizing our Japanese collection to research, record & reinterpret patterns found on kimonos and armour.
Headdresses, Helmets and Hats
- An active and engaging session which explores the possibilities of structure, shape, form and materials of headwear from cultures and traditions across the globe.
Form Follows Fashion
- Corsets and Contours.
- Lively exploration of the attitudes towards gender, sexuality, prestige and power as laid bare in fashion, costume, portraiture, armour & clothing.
- Elizabethan court dress, Victorian corsetry and Tudor codpieces.
Goth – that’s Gorgeous!
- Extravagant consumption through the ages explored through the iconography of warfare
- Uses rare medieval manuscripts, armours, costumes and ephemera.
Forging fashion
- Global politics, social identities and personal responsibility are analysed by investigating our distinctive collection.
- Consider the ethics & attitudes of artists and designers towards warfare across cultures and time.
- Resources include uniforms, armour, utility clothing, protest banners & contemporary art.

To Book
- All Art sessions last 90 minutes, with a maximum number of 32 students.
- Our sessions are £4 per student, with one adult free per ten students.
