Is Plastic-fantastic?

This session is suitable for Key Stage Four (_Useful products from organic sources_).

We compare historic materials to those used today discovering about polymers and plastics. Use a simple experiment to look at the properties of plastics, especially those that are found in common use.

We can test physical properties such as strength by using our Tensile Strength machine or chemical properties (patterns of behaviour) such as those encountered in museum conservation.

Faster than a speeding bullet

The standard Lee Enfield rifle, used by the British Army in both world wars, fired a bullet which left the muzzle at a speed of 720 metres per second and which spun at 144,000 revolutions per minute. Half the speed of a dentist’s drill.
