The First World War

Photograph of Women's Land Army in world war one fixing an engine

What can we learn from photographs from the First World War?

What do all those badges, chevrons, cap-badges and uniforms actually mean?

This session gives you the opportunity to compare your own material with archival images from our collection.

A great session for those seeking to learn more, a good starting point for local and family history or WEA groups to put their own material and experiences in context.

Old idea, new materials

The tips of the lances used by the Royal Armouries jousters are made from balsa wood and are designed to be broken, this was something that was done in some tournaments in the 15th century, though not using balsa wood.
