Friday 23 July & Friday 13 August
Early in his reign King Henry VIII was presented with a number of armours by the Emperor Maximilian I. Among these was a fabulous suit of armour for Henry to wear in parades.
The helmet had a visor in the form of a grotesque human face and later, ram’s horns were added to it. Although the suit of armour was most likely sold as scrap metal, the extraordinary helmet survives today as an object of curiosity, and is now one of the most iconic pieces in our collections.
The helmet has been the subject of much debate over the years and this lecture sheds new light onto perhaps the most controversial piece of armour in England.
