Museum Director - Operations
Steven Burt
Steven Burt is Museum Director of the Royal Armouries Museum tasked with delivering a successful, visitor-focused, educational heritage attraction, across all the three sites – Leeds, Tower of London and Fort Nelson.
Born and bred in Leeds he was runner up in 2008 for the prestigious ‘Spirit of Leeds’ award for outstanding contribution to the city. Steven is well known for his public lectures and books on the history of the ‘Capital of the North’ and is former President of the Thoresby (Leeds Historical) Society. He started his career as a teacher with a passion for history, which led to his work on the creation of the Thackray Medical Museum which opened in 1997 with a grant of £3million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
He became Advisory Teacher for Leeds City Council’s Inspection Services which he undertook for five years working in a series of settings including West Yorkshire Playhouse. His next major move came when he undertook the role of Resources Manager for Education Leeds, being responsible for the second largest museum’s loans service in the country as well as contributing to the introduction of the new on-line services for schools. As a result of this work he became head of South Leeds City Learning Centre, part of the government’s Excellence in Cities initiative, that used the latest technology to actively engage young people in learning. The success of this centre’s activities led to further promotion and he became Area Manager for South of the city.
