Museum Director - Finance and Commercial
Peter Doherty
Peter Doherty was appointed Finance and Commercial Director of the Royal Armouries in March 2010. His role is to develop and implement strategic financial plans and projects, to provide a framework of control, support and reporting on financial matters, and to maximise internal and external income streams.
Peter commenced his professional career with Brown Butler, a Leeds city firm of Chartered Accountants. It was whilst working here that he obtained both full accountancy and taxation qualifications – becoming a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA) and an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT).
A growing interest in the accounting and audit of not-for-profit organisations led Peter to become Finance Manager at the British Red Cross, where he developed and managed a team for the North of England that was responsible for the business support of a range of care services, income generation activities, national projects and change initiatives.
Peter left the British Red Cross in 2004 to become Finance and HR Director of the National Science Learning Centre in York. He played a key role in helping to plan and set up the Centre, which opened in 2005, and he was responsible for its strategic financial direction which enabled the Centre to successfully establish and significantly expand its operations.
Peter left the National Science Learning Centre to join the Royal Armouries. He lives in Leeds with his wife and three children.
